UPI Apps in India: Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm and BHIM Compared
Almost every digital payment in India today runs on UPI, but most people only see the app, not the rules underneath. This guide on UPI apps in India separates the two. NPCI and the banks decide limits, reversals and most charges. Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm and BHIM decide the interface, the extras and how well support works.
We cover the four apps people compare most, plus UPI Lite. Where an app’s official terms were not available to us, the page says so instead of guessing.
Quick verdict
No single app is “best”. Because limits and reversals come from NPCI and your bank, switching apps will not raise your daily limit. Choose on interface, merchant acceptance, support and offers you actually use. Keep one backup app installed.
Same rails
All four apps use UPI. Core limits apply to your bank account, not to the app.
Free for you
NPCI says ordinary consumers keep using UPI free. Merchant-side charges are separate and still pending.
Small = Lite
UPI Lite suits payments up to ₹1,000 without entering a PIN each time.
What are UPI apps?
UPI (Unified Payments Interface) is the payment network run by NPCI. A UPI app is the front end that lets you link a bank account, create a UPI ID and pay by ID, mobile number or QR code. Money moves directly between bank accounts, usually within seconds.
An app is not a bank. The bank that holds your account debits you, and the app only passes your instruction. That is why failed-payment rules and limits are tied to the bank and NPCI framework.
How to set up and link your bank account
- Install the app from the official Play Store or App Store listing.
- Register with the mobile number linked to your bank account. The app verifies it by SMS from your phone’s SIM.
- Select your bank and choose the account to link.
- Set a UPI PIN using your debit card’s last six digits and expiry date, or Aadhaar-based set-up if your bank offers it.
- Check your balance once to confirm the PIN works, then make a small first payment.
Set-up screens differ slightly by app and bank. Never share your PIN or OTP with anyone, including “support” callers.
How to send money and scan QR codes
Send to a person: enter a UPI ID, mobile number or bank details, check the name shown, enter the amount and your PIN. Pay a shop: scan the merchant QR, confirm the merchant name, enter the amount and PIN.
UPI transaction limits
The standard ceiling is ₹1 lakh for most payments, with a limit on the number of transactions per day. NPCI sets the ceilings, and your bank may set lower internal limits. In September, higher merchant limits took effect for verified merchants in selected categories, while person-to-person transfers stayed at ₹1 lakh.
| Payment type | Limit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Person to person (P2P) | ₹1 lakh per day | Unchanged by the merchant-limit revision. |
| General merchant payment (P2M) | ₹1 lakh per transaction | Bank may apply its own daily cap. |
| Capital markets, insurance, travel, government e-marketplace, tax | Up to ₹5 lakh per transaction; ₹10 lakh in 24 hours | Verified merchants in specified categories only. |
| Credit card bill payments | Up to ₹5 lakh per transaction; ₹6 lakh per day | As reported from the NPCI circular. |
| UPI Lite | ₹1,000 per transaction; ₹5,000 wallet balance | See the UPI Lite section. |
| App-specific daily caps | Not publicly confirmed | Some sources mention app-level caps. Check the limit shown inside your app. |
The ceiling applies to your bank account across all apps. New users or new devices may see temporary lower caps as a fraud precaution.

Charges and fees
For ordinary users, sending money and paying merchants on UPI is free. Charges that exist sit elsewhere:
| Item | Who pays | Status |
|---|---|---|
| P2P transfers | Nobody | Free. |
| Merchant payments up to ₹2,000 | Nobody | Zero MDR retained. |
| Merchant payments above ₹2,000 (select P2M) | Merchant | 0.4% MDR, capped at ₹300 at ₹75,000 and above. Rollout deferred until after Diwali; date to be notified. |
| Railways, telecom, insurance, fuel above ₹2,000 | Merchant | Flat ₹5 per transaction, as reported. |
| Small merchants (P2PM model) | Nobody | Zero-MDR regime preserved. |
| Bill-payment or recharge convenience fees inside an app | Possibly you | Not publicly confirmed here. Check each app’s latest terms. |
MDR is a merchant-side fee. Banks have been advised that merchants should not add it as a separate surcharge, but shop prices could still adjust.

This is what a merchant would pay once the framework starts. You, the customer, are not charged directly.
Supported banks and payment methods
Most major banks support UPI, and each app shows its own list of supported banks during linking. Besides bank accounts, UPI also works with some RuPay credit cards for merchant payments (not person-to-person). Our Kiwi Credit Card review shows how that works in practice. Wallet-style balances and credit lines, where an app offers them, follow their own terms and are not the same as standard UPI.
UPI Lite versus regular UPI
How it works: every payment is authorised with your UPI PIN and debited from your bank account. Best for: larger or one-off payments. Limit: up to ₹1 lakh for most payments, subject to the rules above.
How it works: an on-device wallet you load from your bank account. Payments up to ₹1,000 need no PIN. Limits: ₹1,000 per transaction and ₹5,000 wallet balance, per NPCI’s revised limits. Sources differ on daily top-up and usage caps (₹4,000 and ₹10,000 are both quoted), so check your app. A lower-cap offline version called UPI Lite X also exists. Best for: metro fares, snacks, parking and other small spends.
UPI Lite is a prepaid wallet, so a lost phone puts only the loaded balance at risk. Unused balance can be returned to the source bank account through your bank.
Cashback, rewards and offers
Offers differ by app, change often and are usually time-limited or tied to specific merchants. We are not listing any because none could be verified from official pages for this guide, and quoting old offers would mislead you. Read the terms inside the app before counting on a reward, and remember that UPI payments to merchants are zero-fee, so offers are promotional.
Failed payments, refunds and pending transactions
- Debited but payment failed: wait for the automatic reversal. Under RBI’s turnaround-time framework for failed transactions, the bank is expected to reverse within a few working days (commonly T+5) and compensate for delay. Confirm the current circular on the RBI site.
- Status “pending”: do not retry immediately. Check your bank statement first to avoid a double payment.
- Merchant refunds: returned by the merchant, so timing depends on them.
Keep the UPI transaction ID, amount, date and a screenshot. You will need them for any complaint.
Security and fraud prevention
- Never enter your PIN to receive money, and never share it or any OTP.
- Check the payee name before paying; scan QR codes only from sources you trust.
- Do not install apps or screen-share at the request of “customer care”.
- Use a screen lock and download apps only from official stores.
- Be wary of unknown collect requests. Reports say NPCI discontinued person-to-person collect requests; treat any such request as suspicious.
How to raise a complaint
- Use the help or “raise a complaint” option in the app with the transaction ID.
- If unresolved, write to your bank, which holds your account.
- If the bank does not respond within the stated time, approach the RBI Integrated Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in.

Final verdict
Among UPI apps in India, the differences that matter are smaller than the marketing suggests. Limits, reversals and charges come from NPCI, RBI and your bank, so learn those rules first. Then pick an app you find easy and trust, enable UPI Lite if you make many small payments, and guard your PIN. Watch for the merchant-fee rollout date, since it may influence prices at some shops, though it does not change what you pay to send money.
